Without warning, we may find ourselves engulfed by relentlessly turbulent storms of adversity. For very good reasons, the Lord expressly commands us to be not afraid even when all about us may seem to tell us otherwise. Though fear may seem to protect us from danger, ultimately it cripples us for it dismisses the faith we need if we are to act. In our paralysis, we lose all reason to hope as we are swallowed up in the depths of despair.
Coupled with the command to fear not, the Lord also directs us to be of good cheer. In dire circumstances, we may find this directive rather perplexing. What is there to be so cheerful about as our boats are taking on water and there is no ray of light within view? What hope have we to place our sights on?
We have great reasons to rejoice. The Master of all, of Earth and element, seeks to abide with us, even in our time of need. Though we may not see His hand for a time, the Lord often comes in the last watch of the night, just as the morning of a new day breaks way. Even as the storm may rage on, we can take comfort knowing that He will seek us out and come to our aid.
In our own night of great turmoil, would we think to leave the supposed safety of the boat and come to Him on treacherous waters? If the Lord beckoned us to come out to Him, would we? In truth, our own human constructs are not as invincible as they appear to be. We are better off braving the deep and drawing close to His side. If we cleave to our faith, heed the Lord’s invitation to come, and keep our eyes fixed upon Him, we will not be only safe, but with His power we just may achieve the seemingly impossible.
